Purchasing kitchen cabinets from one of those Big Box or Home Improvement stores can turn out to be huge mistake. You have no idea if the person assisting you in designing and ordering one of the largest purchases of your life has been working in the cabinet business for 20 years or 2 weeks. If you would like to take a chance with your money and your project timeline, then don’t bother reading on and just go for it. Lots of people do, and many of them are really sorry they jumped so quickly. Please read on.

FIGURING OUT WHAT STYLE CABINETS TO BUY ONLINE

There are two basic styles of cabinets available now, the traditional cabinet and the frameless European style cabinet. For people that would like a nice clean modern look, the European style is probably right for you. With no face frames on the cabinet boxes all you see are the doors and drawer fronts with no trim in between. It can be quite the challenge to decide on everything you would like in your new kitchen.

Kitchen cabinets are basically all constructed the same way. They all start with a box, with or without a face frame, fixed shelving or adjustable, a door and possibly some drawer fronts. Ordering cool options for your kitchen is always an option, like pot and pan storage, rolling trays, full extension drawer runners, etc. Now you have a box with a shelf or two, possibly a roll out tray, doors and a couple drawers. So what’s the deal with the huge difference in price you ask? That is a good question.

Thickness and type of material used in the cabinet sides is one of the differences between cabinet manufacturers and options. Door profiles, wood species and color of the finish vary a little between companies. Not enough to create such a big difference in prices between certain kitchen cabinet companies. The finishing processes are all excellent, but the Canadian manufacturer Kitchencraft claims to use one finishing process that the USA’s EPA won’t allow here. Whether it make that much difference in the quality of the finish, I don’t know. Please don’t spend huge amounts of time researching all the finish specs from the big cabinet companies. Get some samples and choose what you like. Move on because there are plenty of other decisions you are going to have to make before you kitchen project is complete.

Plywood ends and all plywood construction are a couple construction options to consider. Some companies offer plywood ends as a standard construction method. Furniture board or high grade particle board is what most of us know the other construction material as. Furniture board is fine for cabinet ends as they are all going to be screwed together and to the walls. Some contractors prefer plywood ends in a very humid climate. That’s a personal choice that I’m not sure I agree with. Now when it comes to a sink base cabinet or vanity, I would probably order those cabinets with plywood ends just in case of a water leak under the sink. I think that plywood would dry out more consistently than furniture board. But again, the choice is up to you. Do a littler research on that and decide for yourself if it’s worth the extra cost.

A couple great things to look for as standard equipment or an option is full extension drawer runners, and easy closing drawer guides like the Blum Blumotion types. The full extension runners allow the drawers to be opened all the way so you can use the space in the back of the drawer normally not accessible with a standard drawer guides. The Blumotion drawer guides slow the drawer down as it is closing so they don’t slam shut damaging the drawer fronts over time. Nice and quiet too.

Specification books and color brochures are a must to have after you’ve decided on a kitchen cabinet manufacturer. This will help you decide on the gigantic amount of add on goodies that are available to you. If you already have an idea of what you need in your kitchen like storage for baking pans, spice racks, roll out pantries, you are ahead of the game. Take a walk around your current kitchen and think of all the things you don’t like about it and with it had, and make a list to help you design the layout of your new space.

The major wood species for kitchen cabinet are maple, cherry, oak, alder, hickory and pine. Probably the most popular being the maple and cherry as they have a nice tight consistent grain and take finish very well. Don’t forget that cherry cabinets will darken with age, so you might want to select a color that is a shade lighter than what you want to end up with years down the road. Ask your cabinet specialist more about the amount or darkening to expect over what period of time.

They place a thin sheet of material over usually a furniture board door or drawer front, heat it and vacuum it down to the surface. This method creates a very clean, smooth and durable finish on your cabinets. It is also less expensive than solid wood doors and drawer fronts. The only major drawback with thermo foil is colors. Usually the people that order this type of cabinet want a very consistent white or beige color throughout the kitchen. I’m sure in comes in more colors than that, but would you really want any of them? Take a look and see if this is something you would like.

With some of the cabinet companies running on 8 and 9 week lead times for delivery, you do not want any mistakes made by the person sending your order to the factory for production. If they make a mistake on your order, even the smallest thing like one letter or number on only one important cabinet and you’ll be waiting weeks and even months to install your new kitchen. Use a cabinet specialist from a reputable online cabinet distributor. They do this day in and day out. They have years and years of training in the cabinet industry. Don’t chance this huge project on a pimple faced kid and the DIY store that went to 2 week training course on how to design and sell cabinets. This is a huge investment for you so don’t make this mistake with your kitchen cabinet project. You will be so upset if this happens.

Stock up on brochures from your local cabinet stores. Figure out if you like traditional or European style cabinets. Pick a couple wood species that your really love. Look for your favorite colors, finishes and glazes. Check out the full extension runners and Blumotion drawer guides. Look at all the accessories in the brochures that you’re thinking about purchasing. Get really accurate measurements of your space and start making a list of the cabinets that you’ll need for your project. You may be able to get a list of the common cabinet heights and widths from them too. You may want to have them give you a quote on the project and create a list of cabinets for you as well. If you don’t buy from them, make sure the company you do buy from triple checks all the cabinet nomenclature before they order them for you. You may want to get another quote or two from a few smaller cabinet companies as well. This will give you some good comparables to work with.

Choosing a good reputable cabinet distributor online is important. Do your research on them and read the testimonials. Make sure they have excellent and knowledgeable cabinet specialists on the sales team, great customer service and prompt warranty follow up. Ask lots of questions and make sure they know what they’re talking about when it comes to your new kitchen cabinets. How To Install Your Kitchen Floor Tile

Tile floors are among the popular ornamental material for some time now. It takes lots of time for tiles to create a remarkable proof of usefulness and durability. Installation Steps:

1. Know the aptness of the floor that you wish to tile. If you found out that the kitchen floor isn't level, you need to utilize a leveling compound that's available in powdered form. There are times when you even need to mount a new subfloor just to achieve your needed solidness. If the kitchen has an existing vinyl floor and the owners wants to outfit it with ceramic tile, do not directly put in the tile on the vinyl floor because it will surely pop loose afterwards.

2. Employ a tile backer board. You have different types to select from. One type has a mesh covering with a core that appears like crumbled, rough cement. The other type comes with a smooth core. Both types can be obtained ½ inch or ¼ inch. The thickness of the tile backer board depends on some factors like the adjoining floor's height.

3. Take away all moveable furniture and appliances.

4. Before putting the backboard, find out first if there's a need to remove the baseboards. In order to remove the quarter round and the baseboard, you can use a hammer, a thin pry bar and the laminate sample or the thin board. Position the thin board against the wall in order to protect it from damage.

5. In installing the backer board, combine the thin set, carefully following the instructions of the bag. Using the notch trowel, spread out the thin set onto the floor. Then put the backer board above the thin set.

6. With a carpenter's square, tape measure and chalk line, find out a square center starting point.

7. Do a dry lay-out of the tiles to get the size of the tiles at the borders. Bear in mind that it is good to move the center a little than to cut ¼ inch of the tile at the border.

8. Mix again a thin set and starting at the center, apply it in segments and put the tile over it. To guarantee adhesion, employ a twisting motion plus strong downward pressure when installing the tile. Mount first the full size tiles.

9. When they are dry enough, you can start measuring and cutting the tiles which will be put on the edges. Then, install the cut tiles in the same way as the full tiles, leaving small spaces at cabinets and walls. Let it dry for 24 hours.

10. With water and spray cleaner, clean the tiles.

11. Apply grout and let it cure for seven days. If the floor is totally dry, the grout can now be sealed.

After successfully installing the tiles, you can now experience how satisfying it is to step on the kitchen floor tile that you install all by yourself.

Organic gardening sounds intimidating to a lot of people. After all, to qualify for the organic standard, foods from organic farms have to meet some pretty tough criteria. However, it's not really hard to get started on your own organic indoor garden. What's difficult to do on a large scale is simple inside your own home. While you won't be able to grow a lot, you'll have the satisfaction of having your own delicious herbs and small vegetables. The first step in starting your organic indoor gardening process is deciding what to grow. This will be limited by the amount of space you have, and your conditions. Ideally, apartment gardeners would like to have a flat space, such as a balcony or the rooftop available. However, if you're limited to gardening indoors, you can still succeed. You'll probably have to stick to smaller plants, unless you have a large sunny space that you can dedicate to your organic indoor gardening. Different plants need different amounts of light each day. If you can't provide several hours of full sun, plants such as cherry tomatoes or small peppers won't grow well. Imagine having your own fresh spice rack, in the form of an organic indoor garden right next to your cooking area. Choose from popular herbs like basil and oregano, or add some unusual ones, such as cilantro, lemon balm, or garlic chives. If you have the space, small varieties of tomatoes, peppers, and even string beans can be grown right in your apartment. Some people have even managed to grow tubs of new potatoes, baby carrots and other root vegetables indoors. Avoid climbing plants, bushy varieties, and plants that take up a lot of space.

It's easy to make your indoor gardening organic. Just don't use fertilizer, pesticides, or other chemicals, and choose seeds from organic sources. Since indoor gardens don't suffer much from pests, molds, or weeds, it's easy to do without the extra chemicals that farms or a big outdoor garden might need. Check on your organic indoor gardening progress regularly to make sure your plants getting enough light and water, however. Plants living in containers take more water than those planted in the ground, and can dry up quickly. Not enough light, and your tomatoes can become spindly, your basil thin, and your peppers will drop their flowers without ever fruiting. A little care, however, and you'll soon be able to enjoy the fruits of your efforts. Plus, you'll know they're good for you!

There are many different herbs that are used by wiccans. They have many different meanings and uses and can be confusing to what herbs should be used for which ritual. In this article you will learn some of the most common herbs and how they are to be used.

Lavender: This herb is good for providing clarity and vision. It is also a common ingredient in love and fertility spells. It is marketed by aromatherapy companies as a stress reliever and insomnia cure. Used dry or burned as an incense it can aid with divination practices.

Licorice root: Don't confuse this herb with the candy of the same name. The flavor you taste in the candy is anise- there is very little actual licorice in there. The herb is used to honor Hekate and in death or baneful works.

Mugwort: This herb is used for dream work and can thus be placed in or under the pillow, placed in bath water or sipped form a tea to help with slumber.

Myrtle: This herb is used to honor Aphrodite. In spell work it can be used for love or protection.

Nutmeg: Often found in the spice rack, nutmeg encourages the feminine and can be used to honor the Divine. In spells, it can bring about love, money or luck. It is often used in the Winter Festivals.

Oak Moss: This herb has a forest smell about it but it is well regarded for attracting money. It can be carried with you in an amulet or mixed with other ingredients to form potent incense.

Orris Root: This plant has a beautiful floral scent similar to violets. It can be used for dream work and divination. Sprinkled around a loved one will ensure they return the sentiment. It can also be used in protection spells.

Patchouli: The oil of this plant is often used as a musky fragrance. It is supposedly an aphrodisiac and works well in love and sex spells. It can also be used in money or protection spells.

Periwinkle: Periwinkle is used for love and protection spells. It is so well used in love spells that many countries consider it to be the symbol of everlasting love.

Frugal & Fun Country Decorating

Country decorating can be fun, creative and frugal because the items that work in country decor are either handmade like quilts, rugs, wood items, and folk art, or natural items like dried flowers, branches and flowers. Many of these type of items you can make or find at little or no cost.

Quilts, for example, can be handmade by you with fabric scraps or worn out clothing. If you don't know how to make quilts, you could check out a book from the library and learn how. You may even be able to find one at a yard sale or thrift store, if you're lucky. If you can't find or make quilts, check thrift stores for beautiful crocheted afghans; I have seen many and these would be equally as beautiful in your country decor. Just be sure to find colors that match your scheme. You can drape quilts or afghans over your sofa, or hang on a quilt rack. I have even seen them hung on a wall, like art.

Throw rugs are a wonderful way to vary your decor. If you want a change, just switch rugs or add one in a new area. Rugs can be braided or crocheted with scraps of worn out clothing or fabric. If you don't know either method, there are books out on the subject and you could also do a search on the Internet for instructions. I have found many throw rugs at thrift stores and yard sales. Whenever the price is right and I like the look of a rug, I'll buy it so I can make a fresh look when needed.

Wood items are abundant at thrift stores and are very reasonable. There is a huge variety too; I have seen wood fish, shelves, mini rocking chairs, coasters, placques, bowls, boxes, figurines, letter holders, spice racks, planters and a lot more. Sometimes I'll find a scratched wood item that I like and I'll still buy it because I'll take it home & fix it up with paint. These can be decoratively painted, or just touched up. You can also learn how to make your own wood items by taking a class or studying a book.

Usually folk art is very simple, so it is possible to make your own! Look around at other folk art to get ideas for your own original design, then go to the craft store & get artist paper (like 140 lb. watercolor paper), lightly sketch your design, then paint. If you really believe that you aren't able to do this, then again, check thrift stores! I see charming prints and original art for very reasonable prices. Another inexpensive option would be to frame calendar pages. Look for pretty frames at the Dollar Store.

The nice thing about natural items is that they are free. Hopefully you have your own yard where you can gather pine cones, branches, flowers, and leaves. If not, maybe you have a relative or neighbor that will let you takes some naturals from their yard. Branches and fresh flowers can be placed in pretty vases (check thrift stores!) or canning jars, pine cones look beautiful in big wooden bowls, as do leaves. The possiblilities are endless; just use your imagination for containers and combinations.

You don't need a lot of money to create a charming home! Have some fun and start hunting for or creating the things that would make your home special.
